Between January and September 2017, a total of 19,015 new home permits were issued in the Washington region, 1.3 percent (245 permits) fewer than in the same period in 2016. This under-performance was the result of multi-family home permits, which decreased 14.7 percent in 2017 compared to 2016. However, the number of multi-family permits issued in 2016 was the second highest on record, with data going back to 1990. The number of single-family permits increased 11.0 percent through September 2017 compared to the same period in 2016. Single-family permits have increased each year since 2014 and are on track to reach their highest level since 2013.
